Makeup 101: The 5 Minute Face

Mornings are harsh (and yet I'm up after midnight writing this!). There's just not enough time in the day to do everything I want to accomplish. My day starts in the wee morning and it ends in the wee morning. You'd think spending half the morning in a drowsy state and getting sick would teach me a lesson.

Being able to put makeup on or style my hair is a luxury these days with two little ones. Applying my makeup in a matter of minutes is a must! Here are the products I currently use on a daily to look fresh faced and somewhat presentable in 5 minutes!

Top Row:

Garnier BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector ($19.99 CAD): You'd have to be hiding under a rock if you haven't heard about the latest craze in beauty. BB Creams, a beauty secret from Asia, is now hitting North America. What is a BB cream and why all the buzz? BB creams is an all-in-one skin perfecting product that  combines skincare with makeup. Some are even made to improve acne overtime.

I first learned of it when my brother's girlfriend from Korea was visiting us. She said she loved because it improved the overall appearance of her skin and lightened her skin too. Making my skin lighter really didn't appeal to me so I brushed it off not really thinking it would make its way here.

Brands like Garnier have included all the skin nourishing properties minus the skin lightening ingredients. I've heard Marcelle's is really good and I tested Estee Lauder's version. I found it to be drying for my skin and the shade was too light. I've been testing out Garnier's for a few weeks now and so far I'm liking it. Here's what I like about it: evens out my skin tone, diffuses my wrinkles and fine lines, makes my skin look radiant, and is ultra moisturizing. It also has sun protection. It's a cinch to put on especially if you're in a hurry!

The shade I received is medium-dark. It seems to match me pretty well, but it has a slight pink undertone. After it sets, it just looks like my skin. The coverage is like that of a tinted moisturizer. I'm not really sure what sets it apart from some TM's that also offer anti-aging ingredients, SPF, and coverage. Possibly BB creams offer higher anti-aging ingredients? All in all, I really love how my skin looks after. I get decent coverage in a matter of seconds. Available January 2012.

Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener ($18 USD): A staple! An eye brightener and concealer all in one. Read my full review here

Anastasia Brow Duality ($23 USD): A multi-purpose highlighter for brows, eyes, cheekbones, and even the top of your lips! I like to wear this in the inner corner for a brightening effect. Read my full review here

Shu Uemura Eye Lash Curler ($26 CAD): I never go a day without this! This lash curler gives my lashes the most perfect curl.

L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara ($12 CAD): For the longest time I was using Covergirl LashBlast Waterproof Mascara, then I moved on to various ones from L'Oreal to Maybelline to some high end ones. The drugstore near me had a sale on L'Oreal mascaras so I picked up this one. I hadn't really heard reviews for it but I picked it up anyways. It's a great waterproof mascara with minimal smudging. I'm able to get my lashes full and long with lots of curl (waterproof mascara is the only thing that can curl these straight lashes). The only downside, not a huge one, is that my lashes look crunchy and hard rather than soft and fluttery.

tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner ($18 USD): Finally an eyeliner that actually doesn't smudge! For subtle definition I like to smudge underneath my top lash line very close to the base of my lashes. Read my full review here

Bottom Row

Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Blossom ($7.99 CAD): Tinted lip balms are the easiest lip products to wear. You get a little colour and it hydrates at the same time. I love Burt's Bees tinted lip balms. They are inexpensive and give just enough colour. Pink Blossom is a soft pink, but surprisingly it really shows on the lips! I think it's the perfect shade of pink - not too red and not too pale. I also love Tiger Lily for a peachy nude lip. Read my full review here

Korres Cherry Picked Cherry Oil Lip Gloss ($17 USD): When I want a little glossy shine, I love wearing these glosses from Korres! For a pink nude lip, I like layering Light Purple 23 over top of Burt's Bees Pink Blossom. Read my full review here.

Becca Beach Tint: I think a flush of colour on the cheeks is the perfect perk-me-up. These lovelies don't budge and give the prettiest glow. Thanks to ebeauty.ca, I was able to add Guava, Grapefruit and Peach to my collection. Read my full review here

Benefit PosieTint ($36 CAD): I like to go between a few cheek tints and this is definitely one I reach for. Read my full review here

Revolution Organics Beauty Balm ($34 CAD): When I want a really dewy finish and when my skin is screaming for moisture I love dabbing these puppies on. For a really quick look, I use Bronzed on my eyes, cheeks and lips. I own all three in Blushed, Sunkissed, and Bronzed. Read my full review here

When you only have 5 minutes, what are your go-to products?

Products were sent for editorial consideration (with the exception of the L'Oreal mascara and Shu Uemura lash curler) and I truly love them.

How To Beat The Bed Rest Blues: Makeup Part 1

Many of you may think I'm ridiculous for even bothering to wear makeup while I'm in the hospital, but to prevent myself from getting deeply depressed, putting on makeup puts me in a good mood. Plus, it forces me to have some sort of routine and purpose for getting up in the morning. Many nurses have asked me if I was being discharged because I'm wearing makeup and wearing normal clothes and when I get wheeled to my ultra sounds, I get a few stares because I'm not wearing the typical hospital garb. One of my favourite nurses, Esther, told me that oddly enough pregnancy looks good on me - I'll take it! Guess I should be pregnant all the time! ha!

Now, don't go thinking I'm wearing a full face of makeup. I'm wearing enough to make me look polished and playing on that "pregnancy glow". Check out which products have been keeping this face in check!

1. Nanoblur ($19 CAD): I've had this product for a while and haven't really had much chance to test it out. I decided I'd use Nanoblur because it could blur out any imperfections that my minimal makeup wouldn't cover up. If you don't know the genius of Nanoblur you'll want to know it. It's not a skincare product but a quick fix for when you need to look 10 years younger in a matter of seconds. It blurs fine lines, wrinkles, redness, minimizes pores and even mattifies the skin making it appear more even and less shiny. It works really well as a primer too. In seconds, I can really notice a difference in the texture and appearance of my skin. I don't have very big pores, but around my t-zone area they are more prominent. As soon as I apply this stuff, it instantly smooths out. The texture applies thick and is more suited for drier or mature skin types but I'm sure would work well on oily skin too in smaller amounts especially since it mattifies. I do find that you have to work it into the skin fast because it absorbs quite quickly. You also have to let it set for a few minutes or else your foundation or concealer won't blend nicely. Great thing is that you can apply when you're on the run over your makeup for a mid-day perk-me-up. It's a great quick fix at such an affordable price!

2. Cover FX SkinTint FX SPF 30 in M Light ($39 CAD): Just because I'm not getting any sun doesn't mean I can't fake it. As mentioned in a previous post, SkinTint FX has been my go to TM. Packing this one for the hospital was an obvious choice for me. It gives me a sun-kissed, radiant glow while giving me some coverage. I don't want to look like I'm made up and SkinTint looks so close to my natural skin. If you're not in the loop, Cover FX wants you to help them spread the word about skin cancer! For the month of June, with every new "Like" on their FB page, they will donate $0.25 to skin cancer research: David Cornfield Melanoma Fund Fund in Canada, The Skin Cancer Foundation in the US and SKCIN, The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity in the UK.

3. Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener ($18 USD): This one is an oldie but a goodie! I've been using Photo Op for years to brighten under my eyes (read past post here). If you don't suffer from severe dark circles, you can get away with using this as your normal concealer. But for someone that does need more coverage, this helps brightens the under eyes under your concealer. Instead of taking a full coverage concealer with me, I only packed Photo Op because again I didn't want to look too done up. This brightens and gives a luminous effect and if I apply a few layers it covers up the darkness alright. I've also been using it to highlight the inner corners of my eyes, my brow bones and my cheekbones!

4. Urban Decay Naked Palette ($58 CAD): This has to be my HG of neutral palettes! I've been dieing to get my hands on this ever since its launch and every time I went to a Sephora it was sold out. One of my BFF's was doing a little makeup shopping at her local Shoppers and asked me about Urban Decay. Seeing how she's in the Durham region, I was surprised to know that this location carried UD products. I immediately asked if the Naked palette was in stock and to my surprise it was! She snatched it up for me and now we are forever buds. There are a ton of reviews and swatches out there so I'm sure you know what all 12 shades look like. I love the mix of shimmery, matte and satin tones making it an ideal palette for everyday, bridal and for more dramatic looks. I've used it on a lot of my clients and this is one palette I use on myself whenever I go out. I don't use it everyday at the hospital but when I know a visitor is coming I'll emphasize my eyes a little. The shadows I use the most are: Buck (matte brown), Half Baked (bronze), Smog (golden brown shimmer), Dark Horse (bronze-plum shimmer) and Hustle (mocha shimmer).

5. Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes Mascara ($34 CAD): There hasn't been a Lancome mascara that I've been disappointed with. If you love the lengthening effect of the Hypnose line, you will love the feathery, voluminous finish of the new Doll Lashes mascara (unscented version for Canada). Here's what I love:
  • gorgeous, feathery, and voluminous
  • the conical brush allows you to get at every lash and at the root
  • love the subtle sheen and the shade is a deep, dark black
  • gives a very dramatic lash with a few swipes
  • lashes feel very soft to the touch
What I didn't love:
  • I found the handle of the brush a little big and awkward to hold
  • didn't give my lashes as much lift as compared to other brands I've tried. The length was just ok for me.
  • the softness of the lash didn't hold the lift and caused my lashes to droop later on in the day
  • I prefer water-proof versions. This one was the regular mascara and did smudge on my bottom lash line.
I'm curious to try the water-proof version (if one is released) and see if the lift, hold, and smearing is better. But I really do love the "doll-like" effect it gives. I received the one that is rose scented and actually don't mind it but I think most will appreciate the non-scented version. This mascara will be available mid-August.
Have you tried any of these products? Stay tuned for part 2 of my makeup must-haves!

Products were sent for editorial consideration (with the exception of the UD Naked Palette) and I truly love them!

Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...Smashbox The Gold List!

Give me gold and I'm a happy girl. If you're looking for that gorgeous glow this season, look no further. I love the holiday sets from Smashbox especially The Gold List! Nothing says festive than a little holiday bling!

This is a great gift that keeps on giving. With each purchase from the Smashbox WISH collection, Smashbox will donate $1 from every purchase, up to $25,000, to Children's Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that grants the wish of life by providing medical care, life-saving research and ongoing education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries. The set includes:
  • Fusion Soft Lights in Baked Starburst (Regular Size)
  • Photo Finish Luminizing Foundation Primer (Travel Size)
  • O-Gloss Gold (Regular Size)
  • Photo-Op Under Eye Brightener (Regular Size)
  • gold metallic cosmetic case

Smashbox's original Photo Finish primer is a best-seller and is great for normal to dryer skin tones. The luminizing version is definitely for someone that has close to perfect skin and who isn't too oily. It feels amazing on the skin and gives you the perfect canvas. The primer gives the skin a subtle but noticeable luminous glow. The gold warm hue gives pale winter skin a much needed boost. Makeup stays on all day but because I have an oilier t-zone, my nose did get really shiny throughout the day.

The Fusion Soft Lights (left) can be used on fair to medium skin as a luminizing blush and on med-dark (like myself) to dark it works beautifully as a highlighter. The texture is amazing and velvety soft. Photo Op (middle) is an under eye brightener I use to use religiously. I forgot how much I loved this stuff. The tip is to apply only where it is dark - avoid fine lines as it will start to settle in the lines. I love it on it's own when I'm in a rush or doing errands - doesn't give me total coverage but just enough to brighten and not look overdone. I also love layering it under my concealer for an extra brightening effect.

I LOVE the O-Gloss in Gold. I know from past reviews of the original O-Gloss some people hated it and some loved it. First, the gloss is so smooth and almost feels like a lip balm. Second, when applied on my lips it turns into a lovely shade of peachy-pink with gold shimmer. In case you didn't know, O-Glosses react to your natural body chemistry and is customized to your pH balance. It looks gorgeous on it's own or layered over your favourite lipstick for a pretty pouty effect.

Oh, and the gold makeup bag is super cute! The set is perfect to travel with and is awesome for on-the-go touch-ups. Yes, another must-add to your wish list!

Have you tried this set? Love it? Hate it? Want it?

Smashbox The Gold List retails for $49 USD and is available at Sephora locations and online at Sephora.com.

Guest Review: Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Liner

With celebrities like Rihanna and Katy Perry sporting them on the red carpet, colored liners have become very popular. I currently started to wear them on my lower lids when I don't have time for a full eye look.

Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Liner in Teal ($22 USD): This innovative gel-based waterproof liner stays blendable for 60 seconds then dries to a smudge-proof, budge-proof finish that lasts all day. Jet Set is perfect for lining the inner rim of the eye or as a stay-put traditional liner.

The pros about this liner:
This liner is honestly smudge-proof & budge-proof! It doesn't move which is good if you have oily lids. Also the waterproof factor is amazing! Living in Canada, we will be dealing with a lot of rain and snow soon, so the waterproof aspect will be a god sent!

Liner in Teal applied with the MAC 209

Water has been applied

The liner rubbed five times with my fingers

The con about this liner:
The only bad thing I can say about this liner is it's way too small!! The box it comes in is a pretty good size, so I thought it would be larger.

Overall I like this liner because I don't have check my liner throughout the day to make sure it's not running! I would give it 4/5 because of the size.

Summer Faves: Bronzers

You don't have to be "Jenny from the Block" to get that J-Lo bronzey glow. I am all for bronzers when it's done right (sorry Snooki!). There's just something about a summer tan that makes everyone look healthy, gorgeous and radiant! The key to a natural looking tan is to stick to bronzers that have a golden undertone rather than an orange base. You want to avoid the "Jersey" tan at all costs! Use a fluffy powder brush and apply bronzer on the forehead, cheeks, bridge of nose, and chin.

Get gorgeous this summer with some of my favourite bronzers this season!

1. YSL Terre Saharienne in No. 2 Copper Sand ($60 CDN): This is pure luxury in a bronzer. The bronzer is formulated with the new "Sun Radiance" pigments which capture the light and diffuse a golden reflection in all directions (don't all bronzers do that?). What I love about this bronzer is that it imparts a natural glow to the skin rather than a shimmer. It blends amazingly onto the skin so no streaky tan lines! It's available in 3 shades: Sand (fair to medium skin tones), Copper Sand (med-dark to dark) and Golden Sand (medium to medium-dark). Copper Sand is my favourite. I get really dark in the summer so the warmth of the copper undertone enhances my tan nicely. The price tag is very steep so I'd only recommend if you are a YSL junkie or you feel like splurging on a bronzer ( a staple in my books).

2. Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Bronzer ($39 USD): After being a fan of the Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder (you can read review here) I knew I would instantly love this bronzer. It gives all the same softening, luminous effects as the powder just with a lovely bronzey hue. It is designed to minimize the signs of aging over time while hydrating your skin. This one-shade suits all gives me the perfect tan, however, I'm not sure how it appears on darker skin tones so I would be interested to hear if anyone has tried it. The finish on the skin is more sheen than shimmer which I love. I found the packaging of the original powder very bulky but the bronzer comes in the same shaver-dispense design in a travel-friendly size. The price is still a bit steep for a bronzer but you can double as a shadow!

3. Everyday Minerals Hiking Everest in Heels Blush/Bronzer Duo ($12 USD): If you're looking for value in a bronzer then look no further. This vegan, all-natural line has quality products at affordable prices. Love the name of this bronzer duo. You not only can achieve a faux tan with this pressed powder but the other side is a peachy-coral blush. Gorgeous! At the moment, this is only available in the On The Reef, Coral Collection which is a definite must-have. For $34, you get a sweet collection of loose eye shadows, blushes, face powder, lippie and brushes with a reusable canvas tote included.

4. Mary Kay LE Cooling Bronzing Stick ($25 CDN): There's all this buzz right now about Mary Kay's newest crop of products. This line has been around for ages but is slowly replacing the "granny" image to suit a much younger makeup-loving audience. The cooling sensation of this bronzing stick could not be more perfect for the hot steamy weather. It has the creamy texture of a cream but the staying power of a gel stain. The finish is high-shimmer which is perfect for highlighting the cheekbones and bridge of nose. Great for giving the skin a dewy finish. However, if you plan to use it as a blush prepare for lots of shine. If you have imperfect skin, I would stay clear as it will only accentuate blemishes. To tone done the shimmer and for extra staying power, dust a translucent powder over top. If you're in a hurry, swipe on the lids and lips!

As for the price, I was actually surprised it is $25. I've never bought anything from Mary Kay in the past. If you love NARS The Multiple, this could be a cheaper dupe for South Beach. (Limited quantities while supplies last. Offer expires September 15, 2010.)

Spring Preview 2010: Spring Fling The Corals

It's the first day of March which means Spring is just around the corner (fingers crossed)! To get you excited for Spring, I thought it would be fitting to begin this month with one of this season's hottest trends: coral lips.

Why Spring fling? Because there's too many fun shades to choose from! Stay tuned for more beauty trends Makeup Junkie is crushin' on this season!

Coral lips will warm up any complexion. Let your lips be the focus and give your eyes a nice swipe of bronze, gold, or shimmery peachy-pink shadow. Stick to coral, peach, or bronze tones on the cheeks to compliment coral lips.

Smashbox Heartbreaker Lip Shine Melon Drama: If you love ultra-shiny glosses that pack a punch then you'll love Melon Drama! This colour is gorgeous and such a fun colour for spring. I think this is a universal shade that compliments all skin tones. Gloss feels smooth and rich but never sticky. The shine and colour last longer than your average gloss. The portable squeeze tube means no dipping the fingers!

Bobbi Brown Coral Sands Shimmer Gloss: This is the perfect coral shade to pair with a green or bronze smokey eye. The sheer golden peach hue is lovely on its own but looks amazing over top of a peach or nude lipstick. The shine doesn't last as long, but the shimmer leaves a nice sparkle on the lips. The gloss isn't sticky and leaves my lips moisturized. The only thing that bugged me was the brush; the hairs stick out and is really small. I'd definitely prefer a wand. It's a nice gloss, but 4.2 ml for $20 US is a bit steep. Hopefully they will come out with a bigger version??

Le Metier de Beaute Color Core Moisture Stain Lipstick Marrakech: If you're looking to splurge on a lipstick then try Marrakech from Le Metier de Beaute. I had heard great things about the brand and was excited to receive a sample of their lipsticks. This lipstick is a dream on the lips. Colour is long-lasting and very creamy. Marrakech is a sophisticated coral that has a shimmery frost finish, perfect for after-work cocktails. For all you proud Canadians (GO CANADA!), the brand sadly isn't available in Canada.

Vasanti Tinted Lip Balm in Cancun: Here is one brand that is made in Canada! Cancun has quickly become a favourite and has made a nice home in my makeup stash. I love tinted lip balms and this one does not disappoint. It feels like butta' on the lips and gives your lips a sheer kiss of colour. Cancun is a beautiful coral with a touch of pink that will look great on all skin tones. If you're a little weary to try a coral, then go with a tinted version.

Have you tried these coral lippies? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?

Beauty Feature: Good For Your Skin Cosmetics

What you put on your skin counts. Every beauty brand is coming out with products that are either all natural, organic, or anti-aging. With so many cosmetics offering similar benefits how do you really know which ones work? Makeup Junkie has tested some of the most talked about good-for-your-skin products on the market. If you've been curious about these products, read first before making a pricey purchase!

1.Tarte ReCreate Anti-Aging Foundation With Wrinkle Rewind Technology SPF 15 ($37 USD)
What it is: A natural foundation with clinically proven anti-aging results.
What it does: Wrinkle Rewind Technology has clinically proven to decrease fine lines and wrinkles while increasing your skin's elasticity, firmness, tone and overall moisture. Micronized minerals brighten skin and offer sun protection.
Clinical results: Significant increase in skin elasticity, firmness and resiliency an average of 22% after 2 weeks of use and 43% after 4 weeks of use.
Significant reduction in the appearance of fine lines and facial wrinkles an average of 39% after 4 weeks of use and 67% after 6 weeks of use.
Increases skin's overall moisture by 52.82% within 15 minutes of application.
The Real Deal: While wrinkles and fine lines have not totally wreaked havoc on my skin yet, I did notice my skin looked much smoother and youthful right away. The foundation texture almost had a soft whipped feel to it and blended really nicely onto the skin. The medium to full coverage did not fade throughout the day and also did not feel heavy on the skin. I received many compliments on how good my skin looked which is always good in my books!
Boo Points: We're all for green packaging here at Makeup Junkie but I was not too impressed with the "Flo-Thru Pump". I don't know if I just received a dud, but the pump broke after only a few uses. It was annoying having to bang the bottle onto a dish to get the foundation out!

2. Smashbox HALO Hydrating Perfecting Powder and Brush Set ($59 USD)
What it is: Hydrating anti-aging powder with a science of skincare built in.
What it does: The advanced formulation of pure gold, 48 minerals, 11 amino acids and a powerful peptides deliver powerful anti-aging benefits, while the patented hydration system continuously hydrates your skin all day. Built-in shaver allows for the convenience of a pressed powder but with the radiant finish of a loose powder.
Clinical Results: After 10 minutes there is a 33% decrease in the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes.
After 6 weeks of use, there is a 67% decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles overall.
The Real Deal: Definitely hydrating for my sometimes dehydrated skin! During the winter to spring transition, my skin was a flaky mess but Halo did a good job of not accentuating my dry skin. It has a light coverage but definitely buildable and it left my skin looking luminous. In terms of wrinkles, I don't have a whole lot besides fine lines. I didn't notice the lines around my eyes decrease but the powder didn't enhance them. It's a great finishing powder for under the eyes because it has a brightening quality to it. The texture is also very light. Getting the right amount with the built-in shaver took some time to get used to but it's a cool idea. It really makes you conserve more especially since it comes with the high price.
Boo Points: The high price and the brush. The travel size Kabuki brush felt prickly on my skin and there is no way to transport it. It just ends up getting dirty. The built-in shaver can get a little messy but it stays in one place for the most part.

3. per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel To Go ($17.50 .25 oz)
What it is: A multitasking all-in-one vitamin enriched, sweat-resistant and water-resistant skin perfector.
What it does: Instantly improves skin tone, reduce redness, and help minimize the appearance of enlarged pores and fine lines. Enriched with powerful antioxidants including the universal antioxidant alpha lipoic acid, and vitamins A and E to help repair, protect, and fight future environmental skin damage, this lightweight gel helps maintain hydration leaving the skin with a healthy, even glow by locking in moisture and absorbing excess skin oils.
The Real Deal: I had heard of per-fekt before but wasn't sure if it was a primer or a foundation. The gel texture is very light-weight and blends effortlessly onto the skin. It did soften the appearance of my pores and reduced red areas on my face. I have Rich, a warm tan for a healthy sun-kissed glow. It definitely enhanced my summer tan and gave the skin a beautiful radiance without looking oily. If you have close to perfect skin, then you can get away with using it as light foundation. For me, I like a little more coverage. It evened out my skin tone but I felt some blemishes needed a bit more coverage. I like using this as a base/primer and then applying a tinted moisturizer on top. Foundation glides seamlessly overtop of the gel and lasts longer. You don't need to set with powder because the gel absorbs excess oils. Shh - I went through a couple weeks of laziness and slept with it on and never broke out once! I guess it really is good for your skin!
Boo Points: The price! The travel size is a small tube and is pretty pricey. A little goes a long way but for how long? I've had it now for almost a month and have a lot left so we'll see . The regular size is $57.50 ($USD)! I guess if I use it just as a primer at least I know my skin is benefiting from it! Pretty pricey primer though don't you think?

4. Cosmedicine Honest Face Skin Tint & Treatment SPF 20 ($35 USD)
What it is: A lightweight, all-in-one face finisher and skin treatment with antioxidants and UVA/UVB, SPF 20 sunscreens. It's great for even the most sensitive skin.
What it does: Creates a natural, healthy-looking finish with no telltale lines. Delivers the benefits of essential moisture, broad-spectrum sunscreen protection, and potent antioxidants with skin-refining color.
Clinical Results: 72% reduction in dryness
28% increase in skin hydration
41% increase in skin elasticity
27% reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
The Real Deal: This is a kick-ass tinted moisturizer! This has definitely become a staple in my makeup bag especially for summer. My skin always looks its best in the summer months so I was in search of a lighter foundation. The tint feels weightless and makes your skin look flawless minus the caked on look. I find with some tinted moisturizers, the coverage is minimal. With Cosmedicine's, my skin tone is evened out and my blemishes disappear! I also found with some tinted moisturizers my skin looked too shiny. This tint delivers a fresh, dewy finish. I've never been so happy with the appearance of my skin - I think its a combo of per-fekt gel as a base and Cosmedicine tint on top. For oilier skin, Cosmedicine has an oil-control version too!
Boo Points: Nothing! What's not to love??

Spring 2009 Beauty Trend: Gloss Me Up!

Lip stains and lipsticks are everywhere this Spring but sexy, shiny gloss isn't going anywhere! Gloss junkies everywhere can relax, pull out your wands and apply and reapply! Pucker up for some of Spring's hottest glosses in shimmering berries to pearly pinks!

Stila Pearl Shimmer Gloss (Limited Edition, $22 USD): The pearly finish on these glosses are just fabulous and not to mention ultra-moisturizing! Created with genuine crushed pearl, the minerals and proteins in pearl nourish the skin and leave lips looking smooth and soft, while the subtle shimmer in pearl minimizes the appearance of fine lines. The one drawback is the shine and glossy finish aren't very long-lasting, but I found the pearly texture left a nice shimmery stain on the lips. I really love how moisturizing and non-sticky it feels on the lips. You'll love how pouty the shimmering pearl makes your lips look and the gorgeous colours. Pearlescent Pink (left, shimmering pale pink) is the perfect hue of soft pink for Spring! Looks amazing on its own or as a highlight over a deeper shade. Ocean Current (right, shimmering deep berry) will look amazing on any skin tone. The pearly finish makes it wearable for any time of the day. Also available in South Sea Coral (shimmering soft peach) and Stila's #1 selling eyeshadow in Pearl Kitten (shimmering warm pink champagne)!

Kiehl's Lip Gloss in Pink Rider ($14.50 USD): I am in love with practically all the shades from Kiehl's Lip Gloss line but one of my favourites for the season is Pink Rider. This medium shimmering pink is so pretty and sheer. These non-sticky glosses give your lips high shine which surprisingly lasts for more than a few hours. They also contain natural extracts like Mango, Grape Seed, Rose Hips, Apricot Kernal and antioxidants that hydrate and restore suppleness to the lips. These glosses feel like a balm and have a slanted tip applicator like a balm. Easy to throw in your bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day. Did I mention the sweet scent is addictive?

Prescriptives Tint Balm in Smoothie ($14.50 USD): Sometimes a gal just likes a little lip chap with a tint of colour and sweet flavour. Smoothie is a sheer soft pink but turned clear on me once it absorbed into my lips. The balm did keep my lips moisturized and while it wasn't tacky my hair did stick to my lips in the wind. The flavour smells like strawberries with an after-taste of waxiness which turned me off after a while. I do like the squeeze-tube packaging with slanted-tip applicator. You can swipe these babies on easily even on the bumpiest of car rides!

Bobbi Brown Lip Compact (Limited Edition, $25 CDN): Nothing looks more feminine than barely-there whisper pink lips. Blushed pink lips were Bobbi Brown's answer to this season's soft, sparkly eye. These compacts come with a clear protective cover and can be popped out out if its compact and inserted into the brand's Customizable Palettes. Baby Glitter Lip Gloss (left, soft pink with glitter) looks more clear than anything else with a pretty shimmery finish. Where on its own when you just want some fabulous shine or place over top of your fave lippie. Blush Pink Creamy Lip Colour (right, pale nude pink) is extremely creamy with a shiny gloss-like finish. It is THE nude pink and a perfect compliment to a smokey eye. The only drawback - the protective cover is great but interferes when you're trying to dab your finger in it. Oh, and you have to dab your finger in it - may or may not bother you.

Smashbox Muse Lip Paints in Artiste ($21 USD): Bring out the inner "artiste" in you with Muse Lip Paints. These creamy lip glosses were inspired by layering colours and creating your own custom colour. I get the concept, but isn't that what us gloss junkies do anyway? Sure, they come in pretty colours and provide sexy shine but I don't think the new packaging and name make these Lip Paints any different. Artiste, a creamy berry, gives the look of "just bitten" lips. The texture was a bit tacky, but the colour and shine lasted longer than a normal gloss.

M.A.C. Hello Kitty Lipglass in Nice to be Nice (Limited Edition, $16.50 CDN): Move over pink, orange is sizzling it up this season! M.A.C.'s latest Hello Kitty craze is causing quite a ruckus! I have to say, out of all the collections this is by far my favourite from M.A.C.! I grew up obsessed with Hello Kitty and I think M.A.C. has done a fabulous job recreating this iconic kitty. Nice to be Nice, an intense sheer bright orange with pearl, gives the lips a warm pop of colour. It's a nice change from the season's pinks and berries. The packaging is just adorable and definitely a collector's item. Prrrr, me likes!

Coach Signature Lip Gloss ($22 USD): We all know Coach makes great hand bags but who knew they would make amazing glosses! Packaged in their signature Coach logo, these glosses are chic and ready to impress. These glosses pack on the shine and colour. I love Peony, a pearly peachy-pink. This shade looks great paired with a smokey eye or against bronzey skin with peachy-pink cheeks. Freesia, a gorgeous cranberry with gold shimmer, looks amazing with a subtle gold eye and bronzey cheeks.

Spring 2009 Beauty Trend: First Blush of Spring

Create the first blush of Spring with a healthy flush of colour on the cheeks. Let the pale of winter be replaced with colour and vibrancy. With a hop in our step, bounce in our hair, and a fresh pop of colour on our cheeks we know Spring is finally arriving!

Benefit Coralista ($35 CDN): Don't you just love Benefit's cheeky-fun names? The newest member to join the brand's best-seller Boxed Powders collection is Coralista, a coral-pink powder with a sheen. This gorgeous blush has moved front and center in my makeup bag and for good reason! Some of Benefit's other powders never really showed on my medium-dark skin but not Coralista. The coral-pink sheen gives my skin the most beautiful glow and the freshest pop of colour. It's like Spring on the cheeks with a hint of summer around the corner. The powder is long-lasting and blends to perfection. I adore the boxed packaging, however, wish it was more portable. Again, I prefer to use a proper blush brush for easy placement of blush rather than the brush it comes with. I also love the signature rose scent - makes me dream of Spring flowers... Coralista kicks NARS' Orgasm blush any day!

Smashbox Muse Blush Rush ($24 USD): Give your cheeks a "Rush" this Spring with a sophisticated coral flush of colour! This coral has more peach than pink and gives the cheeks a grown up glow. It has a very subtle sheen, appropriate for the office and anytime of the day. This peachy-coral is the perfect compliment to Spring's fresh greens, soft lavendars, and warm bronzed eyes. The blush is also long-lasting. I love the artist-inspired packaging with flecks of paint and the handy little mirror for touch-ups. If you've been hunting for a coral with no pink then this is the blush!

Tarte A Perfect Whirled Natural Swirl Cheek Stain (Limited Edition, $28 USD): In a perfect world our cheeks would always appear naturally rouged and healthy looking. Since that's not the case, Tarte has created the next best thing - A Perfect Whirled Natural Swirl Cheek Stain. Swirled together, you have a coral-pink and illuminating seashell-pink for a perfectly natural flush. One layer of the stain and you get a soft and sweet pink. Add a few more layers and you get a bright pop of pink with a luminous finish. The blush applies like a cream and is easy to blend with your finger. It's also good for your skin and looks beautiful on! It only uses natural colorants and is infused with a t5 complex.

Prescriptives In-Bloom Cheek Color Duo (Limited Edition, $30 CDN): How fabulous are these blush duos embossed with a floral design?? If these blushes don't make you think of Spring then I don't know what will! Available in Warm or Cool palettes, these duos give you the perfect combination of colour and radiance. I got to try the Cool palette which includes a two pinks: one deeper for contouring and colour and a lighter pink with shimmer for highlighting and radiance. Or where each shade on its own - whatever your heart desires! Looks gorgeous and healthy. You'll love the luminous glow it leaves on the skin plus the pretty floral design!

Beauty Feature: Be My Valentine Kiss-Me Lippies

If there's one way to get some attention this Valentine's Day it's to swipe on some fabulous lippies in the most kissable colours and textures. From tinted lip balms to lip stains, you'll be sure to find something that will make your lips say "kiss me" and keep your special Valentine wanting more!

CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain ($9.99 CDN): Hot of the runways this Spring, lipstains have reemerged just in time for Valentine's Day! Pat McGrath, CoverGirl Global Creative Design Director and my idol, has created ten sumptuous shades that deliver the most beautiful flush of colour to the lips. These water-based stains deliver weightless colour without the heavy look of lipstick or the stickiness of a gloss. The stain is the first of its kind that does not contain alcohol and has conditioners like glycerine and hyaloronic acid to soften and smooth the lips. Its fool-proof pen-style applicator looks like a marker and applies very much the same way. Just colour in those lips for some kissable colour and it will last for hours - certainly through an all night smooch session!

(L-R): Teasing Blush, a pretty berry pink and Flirty Nude, brown-based orange. I love swiping either for an "easy breezy" no-fuss look or using it to really define the lips and adding some gloss to make those lips pop. My normally dry lips never chap or dry out with these stains. They have definitely become staples in my makeup bag and at the low price point you might as well get all 10! Tip: Make sure lips are dry so that the stain can really sink into the lips. Blot lip balm with a tissue prior to application.

Tarte 24/7 Natural Lip Sheer with SPF 15 ($14 USD): I've never tried a tinted lip balm that was budge-proof until I tried Tarte's 24/7's! If you're usually a chapstick gal but want a hint of colour this Valentine's, these creamy lip sheers will give you the right amount of moisture and colour. Eat, sip wine or champagne and Tarte 24/7 will leave a nice stain keeping those lips soft for some after dessert kissing! My favourite part of Tarte products are the Skinvigorating Ingredients and green packaging!

(L-R): For something daring try Monday, a sheer red. And for something sweet but naughty try Tea Time, a deep rose.
Smashbox O-Plump Intuitive Lip Plumper with Goji Berry-C Complex ($24 USD): Whether you believe Smashbox's O-Gloss and the most recent addition, O-Plump, gives your lips your own personal shade of pink or not, it does deliver a lovely healthy pink flush to the lips. If your looking to plump up your normally thin almost non-existent lips, O-Plump will definitely give you the luscious plump you need! I've never really had a need for lip plumpers plus I hated the stinging "sensation" it gave my lips. Since O-Plump, I actually enjoy the tingling minty coolness it leaves and my pout has never looked so juicy (so says the hubbie)! I found my lips looked full and plump even into the next day. Whether it's really my personal shade of pink or not, the shade that develops looks great on me. I love swiping this on when I don't want to think about what shade of lip colour I want to wear. A little mascara, blush and O-Plump is all you need to make your Valentine's swoon!

Prescriptives Colorscope Lipcolor in Classic Red ($17.50 USD): Classics are classic for a reason. They never go out of style. You'll love the creamy smooth texture of Prescriptive's Lipcolor. It hugs the lips and the colour goes on rich with a moist, shiny finish. Evoke the Old Hollywood starlet in you with Classic Red. To keep this bold colour in tact and in kiss-perfection, prime your lips with Benefit Lip Plump. Line your lips with the same colour lip pencil. Apply Classic Red lipstick with a lip brush for precise application. Blot with tissue so it leaves a first layer stain on the lips. Apply Classic Red again. Skip the gloss to get the true look of Old Hollywood glam.

Makeup Junkie Holiday Gift Guide 2008: The Gift of Gloss!

Every gal, naughty or nice, will love a little dose (or a lot) of sexy gloss on the lips this holiday season! Shine sheer or shine high with some of these festive glossy must-haves!

Benefit's Peace, Love and Glossiness makes the perfect Christmas gift of gloss this holiday season! Lip gloss fanatics and Makeup Junkies will love the set of 3 gloss duos that contain 6 of Benefit’s most popular lips glosses with such irresistable names: 1. My people, Your people, 2. Talk To My Agent, 3. 24K, 4. Who Does Your Work?, 5. Magic, and 6. Kiss You.

Shine-on with Smart Packaging
I test ran the lip glosses this week wearing it from my daytime job to a night out. I did touch up mid-day after lunch to keep the lips looking glossy-fresh. The shine of one application was just right for an all-day look and perfectly suitable for a corporate office, where you may want to ensure co-workers are not distracted by over-glossed and gooey lips. What's great is that you can easily change up your look for evening with any of the alternate glosses in the set, and all you have to carry is one tube for 2 different looks! Well, unless of course you’re a super junkie and want all 6 glosses handy!! (Guilty as charged).

Stick factor
The glosses have just the right amount of stick to give a great shine, keep the product where it belongs, and not catch your hair as it blows in the wind! The downside of not being too sticky is that a midday touch-up is likely necessary, as the product will tend to wear away sooner than an overly sticky gloss.

Smell
It does have a slight fragrance-y smell that was initially noticeable. I tend to use products without fragrance (as a personal preference), but overall the smell was negligible and not unpleasant.

Benefit's Peace, Love & Glossiness set is limited edition only and at a steal of price of $30 for the six glosses, it's surely not going to stay on store shelves very long! It definitely makes a great gift, but be careful when buying it that you don’t end up keeping it for yourself!

Available at Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart or online at www.benefitcosmetics.com

If you can't get enough of Smashbox's original Lip Enhancing Gloss then you'll love the holiday collection Rapture Lip Gloss Set ($29 USD)! These award-winning glosses are ultra moisturizing and coat the lips with the right amount of shine and colour.

This party-girl gloss set includes three best-selling shades and three holiday exclusives (L-R): Illume, Radiant, Candid, Ravishing, Lovely, and Stunning. The glosses have a medium stick factor. There's just enough to keep your colour and shine on longer. All the colours are just gorgeous and can be worn separately or layered together for a custom shade. The colours glow with sheer colour which is why they are perfect for both day and night. My faves: Candid, a pearly pinky-peach with gold shimmer, and Lovely, a bright pink.

Exclusive to Sephora, Stila's Shine On Gift of Glaze ($28 USD) will have you swooning! The combination of high shine and ultra shimmer give your lips the poutiness they deserve. Your lips will look naturally plump without the painful stinging "sensation". My only complaint? The click pen style applicator isn't my favourite after using it more because it can be a little messy. You also end up wasting the product with too many clicks. Aside from that, the long-lasting beautiful colours and shine will have you hooked!

There isn't one colour in this set that isn't apart of my beauty stash! The set features four top-selling shades and two new colours. L-R: Vanilla, Brown Sugar, Apricot, Grapefruit, Gumdrop (New!), and Raisin (New!). I had assumed Vanilla would look almost clear on me but the pearly nude is more than barely-there! Brown Sugar is a gorgeous warm golden nude, slightly darker than Vanilla. This is a flattering shade on all skin tones and is wearable any time of the day. Apricot, a melon-nectarine and an old fave, looks like my lips but better. Grapefruit, a frosted pink, is the prettiest soft pink on the lips! Gumdrop, vibrant pink, will perk you up and brighten up any look. Raisin, a shimmering golden plum and another new fave, is the perfect shade for those festive evening cocktails. Stila Shine On Gift of Glaze will be another glossy set you might keep for yourself!

Forget giving this one away! Tarte Purse Your Lips Limited Edition Lipgloss Clutch ($39 USD) is definitely one you should keep for yourself! The stunning gold and deep purple clutch comes with 9 mini Tarte Vitamin-Infused lipglosses! These limited edition shades are infused with the Tarte t5 super fruit complex, which is a proprietary blend of the five most active superfruits: goji, acai, maracuja, acerola, and pomegranate. Not only do these pretty lippies look great but they are good for you inside and out!

Top Row: shell with silver glitter, coral with pearly pink finish, golden brown shimmer, golden plum, sheer soft pink, candy pink. Bottom Row: raspberry-red with gold and pink flecks, cranberry-gold, and true red. I'm in love with all the colours! The glosses don't have names and aren't apart of the original line. I love the balm-like texture, sheer but noticeable colour, and the soft sweet scent. The colour is lasting but the shine wears off after a few hours. You can definitely blend and layer but each colour is as sweet on their own. The little clutch is just adorable and would look great with any outfit! It's big enough to hold your keys, some money/credit card, your cell, and a few of these mini glosses. They are pint size, but with 9 glosses to choose from it'll be a while before you use all these lippies! Sorry gals, this one is for me! :)

Know someone with a sweet tooth? Then she'll love Jaqua Lip Frosting Trio ($24 USD)! Jaqua, a beautifully packaged, true fragranced, and highly effective bath and beauty products were created by the Jaqua sisters, who began the line to fulfill their beauty needs that weren't being met. I am a sucker for anything sugary, sweet and yummy smelling!

The set of 3 Lip Whips contain: Cocoa Buttercream Frosting Lip Whip, the popular Pink Buttercream Frosting Lip Whip, and Raspberry Buttercream Frosting. I've become a huge fan of these glosses not only for their sweet-smelling scents and flavour, but for the hydrating formula containing Vitamin E and other nourishing ingredients. Seriously, I was surprised after eating a dinner and watching a movie how moisturized my lips felt and how lasting the colour was. All 3 colours are gorgeous but my faves are Pink Buttercream Frosting and Raspberry Buttercream Frosting. Pink Buttercream is a pinky-gold shade that gives a subtle finish on its own or adds beautiful shimmer layered over lipstick. Raspberry Buttercream Frosting looks fantastic on its own and will make you look hot on those cold nights out. Also looks lovely mixed with Pink Buttercream Frosting. Your girlfriends trying to lose a few pounds won't feel guilty indulging in these sweet treats!

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the glossiest lips of all?" You will with Too Faced Mirror Mirror Mini Lip Gloss Set ($21 USD)! This is for a gal who loves A LOT of shine and not a whole lot of colour. These glossies are super shiny and very moisturizing. They make the lips look like glass! They don't settle into your fine lines and give the appearance of plump lips. Each gloss has a different subtle scent and the most up-lifting, good-for-the-ego, names!

L-R: I'm Perfect (sheer beige), I Know You Want Me! (clear), Damn I'm Hot! (sheer red), Don't Hate Me... (sheer pink). The colours don't really show up on me but I love the high-shine finish. My favourite is the clear shade because it looks great on its own and can be layered over top of your favourite lip colour. The shiny gloss finish will make you look radiant even when you don't feel your most radiant. Grab the spotlight this holiday season with this sexy set of glosses!

Dress up those lips with a little glitter and shine! Bobbi Brown's limited-edition Glitter Lip Gloss ($25 CAD) will have your lips twinkling under the mistletoe! Infused with light-reflecting flecks of glitter, these glosses deliver high-shine and come in 6 fabulous shades. Can't decide on a shade? Why not get all 6 in Bobbi Brown's new 6 Pan Custom Palette!

This Glitter Lip Gloss in Rave is stunning deep chocolate plum with golden flecks. I love this gloss because it's different than any of the glosses I own. This also looks hot layered over a plum or pink lipstick! The glitter particles are very fine so it doesn't feel grainy on your lips. You can be sure with the thicker texture that your colour and glittery shine will last for hours. I'd probably avoid this though on those windy nights or you'll have to deal with sticky hair. But rockin' this lovely shade is worth it!

The smell of ginger bread cookies automatically makes me think of Christmas. Dionis, a bath and body company that uses 90-95% natural ingredients, has come out with a limited-edition Ginger Mint Lip Gloss ($4.99 USD). This yummy ginger-mint scent will have you dreaming of Christmas cookies! It is non-sticky and extremely hydrating, keeping lips soft and smooth.

I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer pop of red shimmer it left on my lips. The colour isn't so heavy you'd feel uncomfortable wearing it during the day, but layer on another coat and you've got ultra shiny lips with a bit more punch! For the price, this gloss is a steal! You can buy for every friend or family member without breaking the bank!

Have you tried any of these glosses? Love 'em? Hate 'em?
